Etenesh Diro LOSE SHOES and run after fall in RIO 2016 Olympics
Etenesh Diro, a finalist in the event at the London Games four years ago lost her shoe, after a fall during the last of three heats. When she started her run in the steeplechase preliminary heats in Rio, she had two shoes and was considered a favorite to win. Neither of these things were true by the time the race was over. Diro fell and experienced a shoe malfunction about halfway through the race. Instead of trying to deal with the shoe, she was threw off her sock and shoe, and finish the race with just one shoe and one bare foot.
Diro received huge applause from the crowd at the Estadio Olimpico, as she finished seventh in a time of 9:34.70 out of 17 women. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near the top three people, who will move on to the semifinals. But the mark was more than 20 seconds off her personal best, and she failed to advance to the final. Afterwards, she laid on the track and cried as competitors comforted her. Crestfallen, she was assisted from the track, after the race in the arms of officials.
Ethiopian athlete Etenesh Diro was left distraught, after missing the final of the 3000m steeplechase, having run the last 800m of her heat with just one shoe.
UPDATE: Diro was allowed to advance after an appeal.
